Dreamscapes in Bronze: The Timeless Poetry of the Lalannes at Design Miami/Paris

When Nature Becomes Bronze: Claude & François-Xavier Lalanne with Julie Hamisky at Design Miami/Paris

This October, Design Miami/Paris opens its doors to a world where art, nature, and surrealism entwine in exquisite harmony. From 21–26 October 2025, Galerie Mitterrand presents a poetic dialogue between generations: the timeless genius of Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne and the luminous legacy carried forward by their granddaughter Julie Hamisky.

Hamisky, born into a dynasty where sculpture and poetry of form are a family language, brings fresh breath into the Lalanne universe. Her mastery of galvanoplasty captures the fragility of flowers and leaves in metal, suspending nature in time with startling precision. There is a tenderness to her work—delicate veins and petals transfigured into lasting memory—that echoes Claude’s dreamlike gardens while affirming her own contemporary voice.

Claude Lalanne’s Ginkgo furniture, inspired by leaves gifted from friends returning from Japan, embodies the surreal elegance that made her vision so singular. Enlarged and transformed, the leaf becomes both functional and fantastical—a piece of living sculpture for the garden. Alongside this, her Fauteuils Crocodile (2015) remind us of her audacious creativity: organic forms molded directly from crocodile skins, as though nature itself collaborated in the design.

François-Xavier’s works balance power and whimsy. From the iconic Rhinocrétaire (1964) to the Petit Rhinocéros Mécanique (1982), his fascination with animals finds expression in sculptural pieces that redefine domestic space. His Singe Attentif series distills form and gesture into pure perfection—playful yet monumental.

Anchoring the presentation is the haunting Fontaine Pleureuse (1983), displayed in the garden of Hôtel des Maisons. Carved in stone, its faceless head becomes a vessel for tears, a literal and metaphorical “fountain of sorrow.” It is a sculpture that strips identity to reveal emotion itself, standing as a poignant emblem of Lalanne’s poetic vocabulary.

This exhibition is not just a showcase; it is a testament to continuity. The Lalanne vision lives on, reinterpreted and extended by Hamisky—proof that beauty, when rooted in both heritage and innovation, remains inexhaustible.
