Valentine Schlegel & André Borderie: A Passion in Clay and Fire

This autumn, Paris becomes the beating heart of 20th-century ceramics. From September 18th to November 22nd, 2025, Galerie Chastel-Maréchal unveils “Valentine Schlegel, André Borderie. Une passion d’Aline Chastel” — a luminous tribute to two artists who transformed clay into language, and gesture into eternity.

Across three intimate and extraordinary settings — the gallery on rue Bonaparte, a private apartment on rue de Rivoli, and the international stage of Design Miami. Paris — the exhibition unravels a rare dialogue between two singular voices, united by one collector’s discerning passion.

Valentine Schlegel’s work whispers with organic sensuality. Her biomorphic forms, smooth as river stones, radiate a meditative calm. Shades of pearly whites and curving silhouettes capture a poetry of stillness — ceramics that seem to breathe, as though sculpted by air and tide. A pioneer of organic design, Schlegel infused clay with a distinctly human pulse: intimate, tactile, and deeply alive.

By contrast, André Borderie summons the drama of volume and glaze. His ceramics blaze with intensity, where sculptural abstraction meets precision drawing. His works command space, their surfaces alive with vibrant color and texture — proof that clay, in his hands, was not only material but force, a stage for rhythm and radiance.

To encounter their works side by side is to witness an exquisite conversation. Her softness meets his strength. Her intimacy folds into his grandeur. And in this meeting, one perceives the true magic of Aline Chastel’s vision: the weaving of affinities, the uncovering of hidden resonances, the pursuit of beauty as a way of life.

The journey unfolds like a narrative in three chapters:

Galerie Chastel-Maréchal, rue Bonaparte – the gallery’s historic heart, where the story begins.
212 rue de Rivoli – a private apartment, a confidential immersion into the collector’s personal world.
Design Miami. Paris, Hôtel de Maisons – where this passion steps onto the global stage, from October 21st to 26th.

This is not merely an exhibition but an ode to freedom — the daring aesthetic of the 1950s–70s, when ceramics leapt beyond function to embody an art of living. Sculpture, design, architecture — all dissolve into one.
