A Summer in Hydra: Where Art Becomes a Way of Living

There are places that inspire artists. And then there are places where art seems inseparable from everyday life.

Hydra has long belonged to the latter. With its stone mansions cascading towards the harbour, its absence of cars, and its slow rhythm shaped by sea, light and history, the Greek island has captivated painters, writers and collectors for generations. It is an island where time appears suspended, and where beauty reveals itself not through spectacle, but through quiet observation.

This summer, curator Leslie Kabla captures that elusive spirit with Un Été à Hydra, an exhibition that feels less like a traditional presentation and more like stepping into a Mediterranean home whose stories have unfolded over decades.

Presented from 2 to 15 August 2026, the exhibition takes over the historic Melina Mercouri building, a beautifully preserved stone house overlooking Hydra’s harbour, just moments from the DESTE Foundation. Rather than creating a conventional white cube, Kabla imagines an inhabited interior – intimate, warm and deeply rooted in the island’s way of life.

An Interior Shaped by the Mediterranean

Visitors do not simply move from artwork to artwork.

Instead, they wander through rooms where furniture, ceramics, paintings, textiles and handcrafted objects coexist naturally, as though they had always belonged together. A piano faces the sea. A backgammon board waits for an unfinished game. A reading corner invites visitors to linger a little longer. Every space evokes the rituals of a Greek summer – conversations stretching into the evening, shared meals, music drifting through open windows and the quiet poetry of everyday objects.

Inspired by Hydra’s traditional homes, the exhibition celebrates an art of living built upon simplicity, craftsmanship and an effortless dialogue between architecture and nature. Here, design is never decorative alone. It becomes part of daily life, carrying memory, function and emotion in equal measure.

Craftsmanship Rooted in Place

Following her acclaimed exhibition Une Maison à Saint-Tropez, Leslie Kabla continues her exploration of Mediterranean living, turning her attention to Hydra’s singular identity, its maritime heritage and its enduring culture of craftsmanship.

The exhibition brings together an eclectic group of contemporary designers, ceramicists, painters and artisans whose practices maintain a meaningful dialogue with Greece, its landscapes and its traditions. Among them are Leda Athanasopoulou, Elina Belou, Jeanne Chardin, Daphne Leon, Claudio Coltorti, Leonie Specht, Romain Cadhilon and Lina Zedig, alongside carefully selected vintage pieces and works by Greek artisans.

Rather than existing as isolated objects, each piece contributes to a carefully composed domestic landscape, blurring the boundaries between collectible design, contemporary art and lived experience.

Living with Beauty

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Un Été à Hydra is that it quietly questions how we choose to live.

In an era increasingly defined by speed and excess, the exhibition proposes another rhythm – one where beauty resides in handmade ceramics, time-worn stone walls, natural light and objects chosen with intention rather than accumulation.

Everything presented throughout the exhibition, from furniture and ceramics to limited editions and artisanal creations, is available for acquisition, allowing visitors to extend the experience beyond Hydra itself.

Yet the true souvenir may be something less tangible.

A renewed appreciation for slowness.

For craftsmanship.

For homes that tell stories.

And for the timeless Mediterranean belief that art belongs not only on gallery walls, but around the table, beside the sea and within everyday life.
