RAHUL MISHRA, FLOWERS & SWAROVSKI – ALL WE WANT FOR SS19

RAHUL MISHRA

GOSSAMER – Spring Summer 2019

“White, pristine, unblemished They say it is not a color I love white mists, clouds Lingering on blue mountains.”

– John Mathew

When memory’s floodgates are opened, you are confronted with the precision of details preserved somewhere in your being. Like the dew drops on the lotus leaves. The house we lived in had a pond nearby. There were peacocks and flowers and trees. To match the idiosyncrasy of memory, I have mixed the whites with colourful pieces where I have embroidered the landscape of my village. Memory isn’t even chronological. I say it is an imagined canvas full of things you have hoarded from the past. Like the time when I was drawing the blue flowers with my daughter on a mountain. Those blue flowers have found their way in this collection.

One such memory of a morning, when the rain had finally settled, and the only sound heard was the reminiscent drip-drop from the surrounding greenery, I stepped outside to embrace the fresh air when I noticed the simplistic beauty of crystal-like drops on the heart-shaped leaves of the Indian mallow. Nature has always been a primary source of inspiration for me, transforming this picture-perfect moment of the morning dew into a key artwork for the Spring Summer 2019 collection. The natural phenomenon of crystallisation inspired the use of Swarovski, made from natural elements such as quartz and minerals, these gorgeous crystals have been interpreted as delicate dewdrops; dispersed onto hand-embroidered leaves over fine organza, to achieve a breezy play of light and sheer, adding simplistic modernity and sparkle to the collection.

In a small village near Nainital, my daughter, Aarna, and l sat under the soft Spring sun, sketching. I couldn’t help but admire the beauty around, hundreds of bold blue hydrangeas of varying sizes and tints, distinctive in their own formations, formed an idea for inspiration for this collection. To capture the vivid beauty of the hydrangeas was an arduous task, it took months of research and development to achieve a surface of this degree that is completely made by hand. Intricately hand-embroidered organza petals in shades of blue, were appliquéd onto light fabrics and embellished with Swarovski crystals to create a life-like rendition of the beautiful hydrangeas. With every movement of the garment, the hand-made hydrangeas combined with the crystals reflect the breathtaking beauty of the flowers I found in Nainital.

Gossamer, they say, is the very thin thread spiders produce to make webs. These are the threads of memory from which we have woven this collection.
