Aguas de Ibiza: The Hotel That Made Going Out Feel Like a Bad Idea
Aguas de Ibiza: The Beautiful Art of Losing Track of Time
On an island obsessed with the next extraordinary moment, Aguas de Ibiza offers something considerably more seductive: the pleasure of staying exactly where you are. A rooftop above the Mediterranean, a bathtub worth cancelling dinner for, and the rare luxury of forgetting what time it is.
Ibiza has never suffered from a lack of beautiful places. The island has mastered the art of seduction, from its secluded coves to its impossibly glamorous beach clubs. Yet true luxury is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Not the kind measured in marble, square metres or extravagant gestures, but something far more elusive: the ability to make you forget the world outside.
At Aguas de Ibiza Grand Luxe Hotel, I found exactly that.
Set along the elegant marina of Santa Eulalia, on the island’s quieter eastern coast, this five-star retreat belongs to a more discreet generation of Ibizan hospitality. Part of the NCalma Hotels collection, the property embraces an eco-luxury philosophy, combining contemporary Mediterranean architecture, natural materials and Feng Shui-inspired interiors with a considered approach to sustainability. Water, light and space define its character. The atmosphere is sophisticated without being precious, the design confident without demanding attention. With three outdoor pools, beautifully appointed rooms and suites, several dining experiences and an extensive wellness sanctuary, the hotel has all the ingredients of a contemporary Mediterranean escape.
But two things made my stay particularly memorable.
A rooftop pool. And a bathtub.
Somewhere Above the Mediterranean
There are rooftops designed to impress, and then there are rooftops that make you forget you have somewhere else to be. The one at Aguas de Ibiza belongs firmly to the latter. Suspended above the marina, its two pools overlook an extraordinary panorama of Mediterranean blues. The architecture is understated, the atmosphere effortlessly relaxed, and the horizon seems to dissolve into the sky. I have spent a considerable part of my life travelling, often in extraordinary hotels, but I genuinely cannot remember spending so much time at a rooftop pool. Hours disappeared without my noticing. One swim followed another.
The afternoon unfolded with the delicious absence of obligation. Eventually, I ordered a club sandwich, followed by a burger. Both generous, wonderfully satisfying and precisely what I wanted. Then I fell asleep on my lounger. There was something almost comical about the simplicity of it all. No elaborate experience, no carefully orchestrated moment. Just an exceptional view, good food and the rare pleasure of being completely at ease. Above it all, Maymanta, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant by Peruvian chef Omar Malpartida, introduces a more adventurous culinary dimension, bringing the vibrant flavours of Peru to the Mediterranean through ceviches, tiraditos and contemporary interpretations of traditional dishes.
Yet for me, the rooftop’s greatest achievement had little to do with gastronomy or design.
It made time irrelevant.
A Bathtub, An Architectural Love Affair
I have always believed that a beautiful bathroom reveals more about a hotel’s understanding of luxury than almost anything else.
At Aguas de Ibiza, mine was exceptional. Quite possibly the most beautiful bathroom I have encountered in Ibiza. The interiors draw on a restrained palette of natural stone, limestone, copper and soft Mediterranean tones. Organic textures and thoughtful proportions create an atmosphere that feels both architectural and intimate. The bathtub, however, was the masterpiece. Generous, beautifully positioned and almost absurdly inviting, it transformed the simplest ritual into an experience of its own. I have a particular affection for spaces that encourage you to slow down without instructing you to do so. Here, everything seemed designed around that philosophy. A long bath became an evening plan. The outside world could wait. It was an entirely different expression of the same pleasure I had discovered upstairs: the freedom to remain exactly where I was. And frankly, between that bathtub and the rooftop pool, the rest of Ibiza had some serious competition.
The Other Side of Indulgence
For those inclined to take relaxation a little more seriously, Revival Spa by Clarins offers an impressive sanctuary of more than 1,500 square metres. Hydrotherapy facilities, a hammam, relaxation spaces and an extensive collection of Clarins facial and body treatments form a wellness experience dedicated to restoration rather than spectacle. There is something particularly appealing about this approach on an island historically associated with excess. Aguas de Ibiza seems to understand that contemporary luxury is no longer exclusively about stimulation. Increasingly, it is about recovery, privacy and the possibility of feeling entirely renewed. And few things sound more attractive after a summer in Ibiza than emerging from a spa feeling like a new person.
The Human Side of Luxury
Of course, exceptional architecture means very little without exceptional hospitality.
And this is where Aguas de Ibiza quietly excels. Throughout my stay, the team was consistently warm, intuitive and genuinely kind. Service felt natural rather than choreographed, attentive without ever becoming intrusive. It is a distinction that matters. The finest hospitality rarely announces itself. It appears in the smallest gestures, in the ease with which requests are anticipated, in the feeling that someone has taken care of everything without making a performance of it. Even the 24-hour room service, which I happily enjoyed, reflected that same generosity of spirit.
Alongside the rooftop dining at Maymanta, the hotel offers the Mediterranean-inspired Alabastro restaurant, while its location in Santa Eulalia provides a quieter alternative to the island’s more frenetic southern coastline. Yet what stayed with me was not the number of facilities or the variety of experiences.
It was how effortlessly everything came together.
The Pleasure of Not Leaving
We have become remarkably good at turning travel into another form of productivity. Restaurants to discover, beaches to photograph, experiences to collect. Perhaps the most sophisticated luxury today is the freedom to resist all of it. At Aguas de Ibiza, I arrived with the usual intentions of exploring the island. Instead, I discovered the unexpected pleasure of doing very little, exceptionally well. The rooftop became my favourite place to spend an afternoon. The bathtub, my favourite place to end one. Between them, beautiful surroundings, thoughtful hospitality and the Mediterranean’s quiet rhythm made the outside world feel wonderfully distant.
There was no need for a grand adventure.
Sometimes, the most memorable journeys are the ones that allow us to stop moving.
Ibiza has always known how to make people lose themselves. Aguas de Ibiza has mastered the considerably rarer art of making them forget the time.
And if you happen to be looking for me on my next visit, I suspect you already know where to find me.
Somewhere between the rooftop and that bathtub.
