JEAN TOURET: WHEN IRON BECOMES ART

At Design Miami Paris, Galerie Gastou and Galerie Desprez-Breheret reveal a lesser-seen side of Jean Touret. Forget, for a moment, the carved wood. L’Âge de Fer is about iron – and the extraordinary power of removing everything unnecessary. Jean Touret knew how to make materials speak. We know the wood: solid, sculptural, almost primitive, with his nid d’abeille carving becoming one of the signatures of his work. But at Design Miami Paris, Galerie Gastou and Galerie Desprez-Breheret shift the conversation from wood to forged iron.

And it changes everything.

FROM MASS TO LINE

Wood was fundamental to Touret. His relationship with it was deeply personal, rooted in his experience as a prisoner during the Second World War, when the forest became connected to survival itself. Iron offered another language. Working with the Artisans de Marolles and craftsmen from the Loir-et-Cher, Touret transformed a material associated with weight into something remarkably light. Mass becomes line. Structure becomes gesture. Forged metal begins to look like calligraphy drawn directly into space. There is no unnecessary decoration. No attempt to impress through excess.

Just proportion, tension and an almost obsessive search for the right line.

THE POWER OF LESS

That restraint is precisely what makes the work feel so relevant now. At a time when collectible design can become increasingly spectacular, Touret’s pieces remind us that an object does not need to shout to command a room. In fact, the opposite can be far more powerful. L’Âge de Fer isn’t simply another chapter in the Jean Touret story. It reveals the consistency behind his entire practice: whether working in wood or iron, Touret was searching for the same thing.

The essential.

And perhaps that is the ultimate luxury in design — knowing exactly what to leave out.
